It's going to allow you to have not only the right approach going to the foul line but also to take control of the bowling ball and have a much easier time getting the ball down the lane. You have a weight in your hand. This is actually a resistance for your overall approach. So to have this ball in the proper position is going to create better leverage and is also going to help you get down to the foul line the proper way. When holding the ball, you want to make sure the ball is not too far away from your body or not too close. You want it in a comfortable position. You don't want it too far left, too far right; you want it more on your shoulder line. What that does is it allows you to have a clear path for your arm swinging next to your body, and also it creates the center of gravity to be not so far away from the center of your body. So in other words, when you put the ball in position, if you put the ball in the middle of your body -- which you can do for certain angles, but not for a regular position -- you actually have to go around your body, which creates the weight of the ball to go outside, away from your body, which is going to create tension in your hand, which means you're going to pull the ball. By putting the ball in a position that's a little bit closer to your shoulder line, not outside your body and not too far inside your body, you create a clear path, good leverage, your head will be over the ball more, and it will transfer weight to your left leg. That will create perfect leverage. In your stance, the ball needs to be proper position, your head has to be over the ball, your legs will be relaxed. When you get the ball in position, proper pushaway, the ball will be in position. By having the ball in the right position, you're also going to have -- it's going to create good balance, and you're going to have a strong position at the foul line. That's how you create good leverage.

On a bowling lane you have a few sets of target areas that you need to use. You have the second set of dots after the foul line and then you have the arrows or the diamonds a few feet in front of there. By using the targets on a lane you can create a path. And by creating a path you become more visually comfortable. Besides the pins themselves, you have the dots and arrows to basically connect to each other to create a path down the lane that's not only a visual aid but it's also a physical aid. Your physical approach is going to be based on what you're looking at. So by using the dots and the arrows you're going to actually help yourself create the best angle and also the proper position at the foul line. By using the dots and arrows you create a more visual aid to help you create a path down the lane. Depending on your size, your height, and also your style, you may use the dots that are closer or you may use the arrows that are further away. Generally most people use the arrows because they're more of a larger visual aid but by using the dots and the arrows you create a path. You can create different angles and you also create speed by looking closer or further. You may throw it a little slower or a little faster by where your position is on the lane with your eyes. By using them you're going to be able to get the ball down the lane and create angles and also combat the conditions. And that's how you use the arrows and dots.
How to Hit a Split | Bowling

When you're left with a split, sometimes people panic, and they figure they can't make them. But most splits are pretty much a harder spare to make. And to align yourself for the split is not much different than a regular spare. There's more risk, and obviously it's a little harder to make, but you can definitely make them, or at least make a good attempt if you use the methods of your spare shots, the three-six-nine method, or at least align yourself up with a certain part of the spare. In a split you have different pins you look at. You can look at the left side, the right side of the pin, a little bit earlier on the lane. You could look at a different angle. There's different ways of actually making a split, or at least attempting to make one. For the six-seven-ten split that we have here, the best way of approaching that is to basically go for a ten pin. You're going to line yourself up with the ten pin and allow the ball to just get the corner of the six pen and slide it over to the seven. So in other words, approaching a split is not much different than making a spare. When approaching a split, especially a six-seven-ten split, you're going to line yourself up the same way you would for ten pin. Your body's going to be aligned up with the ten pin spare, but you're going to be looking on the right side of the six pin in order to slide that six pin over to the seven pin and complete the spare. For that particular spare, or split, that's one out of a thousand shots for an average bowler. That's something that you approach very often if you're a competitive bowler, but as a recreational bowler, you may see that once in a while. But to make it, that's one in a thousand. By how I made that, I approached the lane as if I was making a spare, going for a ten pin and using my visual aid to basically line myself up with the right side of the six pin in order to clip that pin across the lane while still making the ten pin. That's how you make the six-seven-ten split, and that's how you handle any split.
